An overview of our curriculum includes the following components:

- Exploring the essentials of customer service and work ethics
- Introduction to the evolution of insurance, including workers' compensation and liability products
- Review elements of insurance policies and interpreting coverage
- Navigating the Internet and understanding e-mail usage and protocols
- Week 2

- Introduction of Medical terminology and familiarization of the anatomy
- Injury Workshop with Guest Lecturer(s) on the following topics:
- Orthopedic injury and treatment
- Chiropractic treatment
- Physical Therapy treatment
- Psychiatric injury treatment
- ACOEM Guidelines
- Identifying Medical Only and Indemnity Claims (Bodily Injury)
- Introduction to workers' compensation benefits and calculation methodology
- Week 3

- Building a claim file (including introduction to all required forms)
- Managing a claim electronically
- Conducting an effective claim investigation (include role playing in interview techniques, proper use of diagrams and photographs, written and recorded statements)
- Establishing medical and claimant control
- Early case management intervention
- Time Management (file diary techniques)
- Reserving
- Claim file documentation
- Reporting/written correspondence
- Reviewing and understanding medical reports
- Week 4

- Introduction to the Legal Process
- Civil Code procedures and terminology (guest lecturers from the legal profession)
- Field Trip (Civil Courthouse, WCAB)
- Introduction to strategy for detecting and managing fraud (SIU guest lecturer)
- Development of negotiation techniques and strategies
- Litigation Management
- Continuation of mock claim file development
- Week 5

- Introduction to Vocational Rehabilitation and process (guest speaker)
- PD Rating Workshop
- Case Law Review including Penalty Code Sections and Unfair Claims Practices
- 132a, Serious and Willful and punitive damage claim review and discussion
- Continuation of mock claim file development
- Week 6

- Settlement strategies
- Introduction to structured settlements as a tool (guest lecturer)
- Review of SB 899
- Preparation of mock claim file for oral presentation
- Final Examination
- Oral Presentation
The basic textbook used in the class will be Herlick for workers' compensation. In liability we use a comprehensive compilation of textbook data geared towards both automobile and general liability claims adjusting.
